Eye Care & Tests

Chellaston Opticians take eye health very seriously, which is why an eye test is the most important service we provide.

Eye examinations are carried out by either David or Bill, our optometrists.

Optometrists recommend that most people should get their eyes tested every two years. However, in some circumstances, they may recommend more frequent sight tests; for example, if you:

  • are a child wearing glasses
  • have diabetes
  • are aged 40 or over and have a family history of glaucoma
  • are aged 70 or over

The way a sight test is carried out is governed by law. A sight test will identify:

  • what your level of vision is
  • whether you need glasses to correct your sight

Your eyes and the area around them will be examined, to look for signs of injury, disease or abnormality.

If you already wear glasses or contact lenses, remember to take them with you to your sight test. You may be asked to wear them during the test.

Minor Eye Conditions

If you have a red eye or symptoms of flashes and/or floaters please contact us immediately for an appointment. You will either be given an appointment or details of your symptoms taken, and an Optometrist will phone you back to arrange an appointment or advise you over the phone. This appointment will be covered by the NHS under a new shared care scheme, which has been implemented in Derbyshire concerning the management of minor eye conditions. This is to help relieve the burden off GP`s surgeries and A&E.

Whilst we are happy to see patients for any other eye or visual problems, this NHS scheme currently only covers red eyes or symptoms of flashes and floaters. All other concerns will need to be addressed within a normal sight test appointment. If you are unsure of which pathway is best for your particular concern, please phone us and we can advise you of the appropriate action to take.

NHS Eyecare

We are registered with the NHS to provide shared care services with the hospital for contact tonometry and children`s eye screening.

Fundal Photography now available

We are now able to offer Fundal Photography. This enables us to take a photo of the inside of the eye, better enabling us to detect subtle changes in the structure of the eye in the future.
